What Are Air-Operated Double-Diaphragm Pumps?
Air-operated double-diaphragm pumps, also called AODD pumps or pneumatic diaphragm pumps, are reciprocating positive displacement pumps powered entirely by compressed air. Two flexible diaphragms alternate in sync to draw fluid in and push it out, making AODD pumps a reliable choice for transferring chemicals, slurries, viscous fluids and shear-sensitive products across a wide range of industrial applications.

AODD stands for Air-Operated Double Diaphragm. The pump is driven by compressed air rather than an electric motor, which makes it self-priming, able to run dry without damage and safe to use in hazardous environments.
Sizing depends on required flow rate (GPM), discharge pressure, fluid viscosity and suction lift. Use our Pump Finder for guided selection, or contact the PSG® Store team for application support.
AODD pumps are positive displacement, so they deliver consistent flow regardless of discharge pressure and can run dry, self-prime and handle solids. Centrifugal pumps are generally higher flow but cannot run dry and struggle with viscous or abrasive fluids.
Yes. Because AODD pumps use compressed air instead of electricity, they are well suited for ATEX and explosive environments when properly grounded and configured. Many models are available with conductive materials and ATEX certifications.
